The normal or neutral arch leaves a print somewhere in the middle. Although the outside of the footprint is shown, the inside arch hasn't made contact with the paper.

Your root rolls inward as you run. This is called over-pronation, and the runner with normal arches runs with mild pronation. The most important factor in a runner with normal arches is stability. Look for running shoes that have material on the inside of the shoe that prevents rolling inward too much.

Low arches in the runners' foot make them tend to over-pronate too much. This runner benefits for a shoe with motion control. Firm wedges hold is along the arch side for the best stability.

The impact of the foot hitting the ground by a runner with high arches isn't absorbed very well. When looking for a running shoe, look more at the cushioning of the shoe rather than the stability. This type of runner under-pronates, so the neutral cushioning shoes make up for the fact that feet don't absorb impact very well.

Toe Box

The area of the running shoe for the toes should give you enough room to wiggle. During a run, your feet can expand and you need the extra room.

Heel Counter

If your heel is the first part of your foot to hit the ground when running, you want to choose a shoe with a good heel counter that will give your heel stability when you run.
